Arsenal midfielder doubles down on club he wants to join when contract expires

Christian Norgaard has reaffirmed his desire to rejoin Brondby when he eventually leaves Arsenal. The experienced Dane jumped at the chance to sign for the Gunners this summer following dialogue with Mikel Arteta.

Norgaard signed a new two-year deal with Brentford earlier in the year but wanted to fulfil his dream by earning the chance to play Champions League football.

Nonetheless, he is under no illusions his career in the Premier League will not last forever and speaking during the international break, he has laid the foundations for an emotional return home to Brondby

Norgaard told Ekstra Bladet : “When I one day return to Denmark, it will be Brondby. Brondby is a club that I developed a special connection to when I played for the club. That’s why I can’t see myself playing for other Danish clubs."

The former Bees captain came through the ranks at Lyngby before returning to his homeland with Brondby following a short spell in Germany with Hamburg.

He spent just under five years with the club before moving to Italy with Fiorentina and then onto the Premier League.

It's the second time Norgaard has recently expressed an interest in one day rejoining Brondby, though it's important to clarify he is not considering leaving Arsenal anytime soon, having only just joined the club.

Norgaard told Danish newspaper Bold last week: “Whether it will be two or three years at Arsenal has not been decided, but we will return to Denmark when the contract expires.

"I can guarantee that Arsenal will be my last club abroad. I still want to return to Brondby when my contract with Arsenal expires.

“My contract is for two years with an option for an additional year. And I would be happy to stay at Arsenal for the extra year if things develop in that direction. If it turns out that it wasn’t the right fit, then we’ll return to Denmark after two years.”

It's been a challenging start to life in north London for the defensive midfielder, who is still yet to feature in the Premier League for Arsenal. A knock kept him out of the club's opening four top-flight matches but Norgaard did recently complete 90 minutes in the EFL Cup win over Port Vale. He also came off the bench in stoppage time in the Champions League win over Athletic Club. Norgaard made 34 appearances in the Premier League for Brentford last season, scoring five goals and registering four assists.
