Chelsea star Cole Palmer has seen a big decision take a step forward while he continues to recover from injury, as he has now registered a trademark for 'Cold Palmer'. The 23-year-old has missed the last four games with a groin issue upon returning from an earlier absence after just 145 minutes of action.
The Blues have just about coped in his absence with three wins picked up from a possible five in the time he has been out injured. Enzo Maresca has been hit by further injury problems in recent weeks, however, with numerous players missing the 2-1 win against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.
Those concerns were further heightened by Benoit Badiashile and Josh Acheampong going off injured, which led to Reece James, who has since withdrawn from the England squad, being moved to centre-back.
Maresca was unable to provide any injury updates after the game , as he was sent off, which prohibited him from holding a press conference.
The Chelsea boss has remained coy on Palmer's condition specifically, but he did appear to reveal that a big decision would be made over the next few weeks.
"Cole is still out," Maresca admitted before the Liverpool game. "I don't have any updates at the moment. We have a meeting this week to see how he is, and we will then decide [whether he can return after the international break]."
A slight update on his recovery was seemingly revealed in the celebrations on Saturday evening when he was bumped into by Jorrel Hato, which resulted in him almost immediately feeling a twinge in his groin.
That being his instinctive reaction two weeks on from being withdrawn against Manchester United after just 21 minutes suggests that his situation has not improved.
With a potentially significant period on the sidelines coming, Palmer could have a lot of spare time on his hands and it certainly seems as though he is already making the most of that.
As confirmed on the trademark section of the Government website , he has filed for the phrase 'Cold Palmer' to be trademarked. That webpage has revealed it was actually formally filed on November 25, 2024, but that the date of entry into the register was October 3, 2025.
The two-word term has become synonymous with England international's celebration, which sees him shake his hands on both arms in a folded arms motion. Considering how popular it has become, it is perhaps no surprise he has taken this decision.
Footballers that have broken into the mainstream world are more often than not making such decisions to become a brand and protect themselves and their interests. Arsenal star Bukayo Saka has already set up a similar endeavour through BS7 Rights Limited which is the company managing his image rights.
Similarly, Real Madrid starlet Kylian Mbappe has also become somewhat of a global icon, and has trademarked his own goal celebration. Palmer will surely be hoping he can reach a similar level to the France and Real Madrid star.
