Crystal Palace 1-0 Fredrikstad: Eagles overcome creative void to edge narrow first-leg win

The Eagles make a winning start to life in Europe despite missing Eberechi Eze

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the only goal as Crystal Palace edged out a narrow win over Fredrikstad in the first leg of their Conference League play-off.

The Eagles struggled for attacking impetus on the night after Eberechi Eze was left out of the squad ahead of making a move to Arsenal.

They were reduced to speculative crosses and pot shots, but their heavy first-half pressure would yield no goal despite Mateta hitting the post and Ismaila Sarr forcing a quality save.

Their approach after the break was unchanged, but Mateta was waiting in the box to tip a wayward Will Hughes shot over the line and open the scoring.

Crysal Palace travel to Norway for the second leg on Thursday.
