David de Gea asks big question as Man Utd look to wrap up deadline day deals

David de Gea has questioned whether the transfer window should close before the season starts or whether the madness in the early weeks of the season should continue.

We're three games into the Premier League season and Monday marks the final day of the transfer window. On one hand it presents clubs with an opportunity to plug gaps that may have emerged in the early weeks of the season, but it also means managers are having to deal with questions over their players.

A number of major names have been the subject of speculation, which has been a distraction. On Sunday night ahead of Crystal Palace 's win at Aston Villa both Marc Guehi and Emi Martinez were the talk of the town as they're linked with late moves.

And the ex- Manchester United goalkeeper, who previously pushed for a move at the eleventh hour to Real Madrid , has said on social media: "Question - Should the transfer window close before our season starts? Or should it continue the way it’s operating?"

Premier League clubs previously voted in favour of closing the transfer window before the start of the domestic season in 2017 - and it came into affect ahead of the 2018/19 campaign. However it quickly backfired as the major European leagues chose to stick with the status quo and that allowed them to go after Premier League players - with clubs then unable to sign replacements.

Jurgen Klopp was among those to bemoan the situation as he said: "I don't care when it closes, I only think it must close at the same time (as the rest of Europe). When they spoke about 'Let's finish it before the season starts then everyone knows their squad' - that's a good idea. But then the rest didn't do it and that makes no sense.

"Can somebody explain what is the benefit for the Premier League? We don't really have a problem but for other teams, their key players are still on the market and everything can happen. You want a team not only together but together and focused on the future, but that is not possible as long as there is a door open."

If De Gea's suggestion was bought back in then a number of clubs, including his former one, would've been left carrying a number of players who do not want to be at the club. Antony's exit is close whilst Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia could still secure moves away from Old Trafford. Ruben Amorim is also looking to land a new goalkeeper, likely to be Senne Lammens.

A number of other big names have haggled for moves, none more so than Alexander Isak. Had the transfer window shut just over a fortnight ago then Alexander Isak would've had to accept his fate of staying at Newcastle . Instead he's due to move to Liverpool in a club-record deal.

An early close to the transfer window would encourage clubs to get their business done early - and end the franticness of deadline day. However the issue of failing to align with Europe would remain, unless all leagues agreed.
