But referee Stephen Martin hauled the players off on 79 minutes due to the condition of the Ewood Park pitch.

Supporters were asked to remain in their seats – with a “further announcement to follow”.

Weather warnings were already in place for the north-west, with the rain set to continue until Sunday evening, at least.

Blackburn’s groundsmen were out with their forks, with the officials testing the pitch to see if the game can continue.

EFL rules state if the game is abandoned - the the two teams will have to replay the match.
