The 29-year-old first broke into the senior England team back in 2017, making his debut under Gareth Southgate at just 21.

He went on to make 10 appearances for the Three Lions but hadn’t featured since November 2018.

Seven years on, Loftus-Cheek was recalled by Thomas Tuchel for England’s games against Andorra and Serbia last month, replacing the injured John Stones, though he didn’t feature.

For the fixtures against Wales and Latvia this month, he was once again called upon and, on Thursday night, replaced Declan Rice in the 70th minute as England saw out a comfortable three-goal victory over Wales.

After the match, he was presented with an England legacy cap by captain Harry Kane and delivered a short speech to the dressing room.
