Gary Neville has been backed to manage Manchester United by one of his former Valencia stars. The former Red Devils defender took one ill-advised venture into management back in 2015 as he took the reins with the Spanish side.

But it turned into a disastrous spell as he was sacked after just 28 games. During his time at the Mestalla, he won just three league games.

Despite that, former Valencia and Manchester City star Alvaro Negredo believes the 50-year-old could be a good candidate for the Old Trafford hotseat given the ongoing crisis under Ruben Amorim .

Speaking to Coin Poker , the former Spanish striker said: “It also depends on the situation at Manchester United. I think he was a very important player for Manchester United. He's a player who gave a lot to English football.

“Perhaps, similar to Valencia at that time, it’s a United team who haven't been consistently at the top for a long time, and perhaps now wouldn't be the best moment.

“But it is also true that changes come when the team is not in a good moment. I would try him, because, as I say, as a coach, I did like him.”

Neville has not returned to management since leaving Valencia, preferring to remain focused on his punditry role with Sky Sports - as well as his business ventures including his part-ownership of Salford City.

Negredo has admitted he thought Neville would be back in a dugout a lot sooner. He added: "Yes, it surprises me because I considered him capable and qualified.

“Perhaps in Spain at that time, due to the language barrier, he didn't get more opportunities, but in the Premier League , I would have given him more, based on my experience. For me, he was a good coach who, as I said, came with a very good attitude and a desire to improve.

“He had been a player, so he also possesses knowledge of the football world . These are decisions that perhaps he didn't want to continue experiencing, and he hasn't had the opportunity to continue coaching."

It remains to be seen if Neville’s next role in management comes at Old Trafford or not. But as it stands, United are sticking by Amorim despite the club’s woeful start to the campaign.

United currently sit tenth in the table after winning just three of their opening seven games of the campaign. Amorim’s side are next back in action next weekend as they take on fierce rivals Liverpool at Anfield.

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £336 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.
