Howard Webb 'admits referee made major error' in Man Utd clash

HOWARD WEBB has reportedly admitted the referee made a major error in Manchester United’s clash with Brentford.

The PGMOL boss is said to have told United officials that Brentford captain Nathan Collins should have been sent off during the 3-1 defeat last weekend , after hauling down Bryan Mbeumo in the area.

According to the Daily Mail , United contacted Webb following the game to demand answers over the controversial decision, with club chiefs Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox personally seeking clarification.

At the time, the Premier League’s match centre said no red card was issued after a VAR review because Mbeumo was not deemed to be in full control of the ball.

But Webb is now said to have admitted to United that the wrong call was made and that the incident did in fact deny a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

The red card would’ve seen Brentford reduced to ten men with the score at 2-1, potentially swinging momentum in United’s favour with plenty of time left on the clock.

Instead, they went on to lose 3-1 — sparking another round of pressure on boss Ruben Amorim , whose future has come under serious scrutiny.

United chiefs are said to appreciate Webb's transparency.

Amorim was under pressure after the defeat but the 2-0 win over Sunderland has since eased that.

Speaking after the victory, he said: "It was not the perfect performance — we had our moment. But we were a competitive and adult team."

Mason Mount insisted the players are very much with Amorim - despite speculation the United boss could lose his job.

Mount said: “We’re 100 per cent behind the gaffer. We’ve had some results that hurt us – the team, the staff and the fans.

“But that was an important win.”

And Amorim said: “I know they want to do the best and I know they don’t want to change the coach all the time. But we need to show with actions.

“I feel it during the week but we need to show it on the pitch. Sometimes they know we can do better.”

United go into the international break with the Sunderland win but there is pressure to get the club back to winning titles.
