Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher described Jota as a “huge friend” after the Portuguese forward tragically passed away in a car accident earlier this summer.

The pair struck up a close relationship during their time at Anfield, with the Irishman even attending Jota’s wedding just eleven days before the 28-year-old and his younger brother Andre Silva died in Spain.

Speaking to BBC Sport , Kelleher admitted: “It’s not been the easiest of times for me, personally, and for the lads at Liverpool it’s going to be difficult.

“He’s going to be a big miss. I’ve lost a huge friend, so it’s been difficult, as you’d imagine.”

The 26-year-old moved to Brentford in July, but made it clear that the grief is still being felt across Merseyside.

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and became a vital part of our attacking options, scoring 65 goals in 182 appearances.

His contribution helped us lift the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022, before playing a role in last season’s Premier League title triumph under Arne Slot.

The forward’s No.20 shirt has since been retired across the men’s, women’s and academy teams, marking the deep respect felt for him throughout the club.

Kelleher himself spent years as Alisson’s understudy at Anfield, making 67 appearances before sealing a £12.5 million move to Brentford this summer.

The stopper has already penned a heartfelt tribute to his mate and it’s easy to forget that he and so many of his other teammates will still be feeling this tragic loss.
