Lisandro Martinez nears Manchester United return after lengthy injury layoff

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez (27) is edging closer to a long-awaited return to full training after more than eight months on the sidelines with a serious knee injury, Sky Sports reports.

The 27-year-old Argentine underwent a scan on his left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) late last week, with results described as “ very positive ” by club sources. Manager Rúben Amorim and his staff are said to be encouraged by the progress, though United remain cautious not to rush Martínez back prematurely.

Martínez’s return would be a major boost for Amorim, who has been without the centre-back since February and has had to rely on an inconsistent defensive partnership in his absence. Team-mate Casemiro recently told reporters that Martínez is “ on the final straight ” of his recovery, suggesting a comeback could be imminent.

If all goes to plan, the former Ajax defender could rejoin full training this week, although the club is expected to ease him back gradually to avoid any setback.

Aside from Martínez and Noussair Mazraoui, United are close to full strength ahead of their crucial Premier League clash with Liverpool on Sunday.
