Man United vs Burnley preview, team news and predicted lineup

Still reeling from their embarrassing midweek EFL Cup exit , a deflated Manchester United side will host newly-promoted Burnley at Old Trafford for their latest Premier League clash on Saturday afternoon. This encounter marks the first meeting between the two teams since April 2024, when the Clarets held the Red Devils to a 1-1 draw in Manchester.
On Wednesday night, Manchester United traveled to Blundell Park as clear favourites, but it was League Two’s Grimsby Town who pulled off a stunning upset, handing Ruben Amorim’s men a humiliating defeat in the EFL Cup’s second round. The Red Devils found themselves two goals down within the first 30 minutes against the Mariners. Summer signing Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire managed to force a penalty shootout, but Mbeumo missed the decisive 26th spot kick in a marathon shootout, allowing Grimsby to progress with a dramatic 12-11 victory.
Burnley, meanwhile, bounced back from a 3-0 opening day defeat at Tottenham Hotspur by giving their fans plenty to celebrate at Turf Moor. The Clarets secured their first Premier League points of the season with a 2-0 win over fellow promoted side Sunderland last weekend, and followed that up with a late 2-1 victory against Derby County in the EFL Cup second round on Tuesday, courtesy of Oliver Sonne’s stoppage-time winner.
Lisandro Martinez remains unavailable for Manchester United as he continues his recovery from a long-term knee injury. Meanwhile, Noussair Mazraoui is nearing a return from a thigh issue, but Saturday’s match is expected to come too soon for the defender. After making eight changes to his lineup in midweek, manager Ruben Amorim is likely to rotate his squad again, which could see Andre Onana—who struggled once more against Grimsby—replaced in goal by Altay Bayindir, who himself has had a shaky start to the season.
In defence, Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro, and Luke Shaw are all in contention for a return. Captain Bruno Fernandes is set to partner either Casemiro or Manuel Ugarte in midfield; notably, Fernandes has directly contributed to 10 goals (four goals, six assists) in his last eight Premier League appearances against newly-promoted sides. Up front, new signing Benjamin Sesko, who made his first start for United in midweek after two substitute appearances, is likely to continue as the central striker, supported by fellow newcomers Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha in attack.
For Burnley, Zeki Amdouni (ACL), Manuel Benson (Achilles), and Jordan Beyer (knee) remain sidelined, while Connor Roberts (knock) is close to returning but is unlikely to be fit in time for Saturday’s game. Recent signings Armando Broja, Axel Tuanzebe, and Bashir Humphreys, who all made their season debuts in midweek after joining the Clarets this summer, could feature in the squad again this weekend.
Manager Scott Parker is expected to revert to a starting lineup similar to the one that secured victory over Sunderland, with former Manchester United duo Martin Dubravka and Hannibal Mejbri, ex-Manchester City defender Kyle Walker, and last weekend’s goalscorers Josh Cullen and Jaidon Anthony all pushing for a recall.
Man United: Bayindir; Yoro, De Ligt, Shaw; Diallo, Fernandes, Casemiro, Dorgu; Mbeumo, Cunha; Sesko
Burnley: Dubravka; Walker, Ekdal, Esteve, Hartman; Cullen, Ugochukwu; Larsen, Mejbri, Anthony; Foster
