Morten Hjulmand: Man United prepared to sign Sporting midfielder in January
Manchester United have plans to strengthen their midfield in January after being unable to bring in a new face in the middle of the park during the summer.
United seemingly put all their eggs in the Carlos Baleba basket in the summer after identify the Cameroonian as an ideal profile for Ruben Amorim’s midfield. His athleticism and intensity have made him one of the most exciting midfield prospects in Europe.
Brighton & Hove Albion are well aware of just how high his potential ceiling is. As such, the Seagulls refused to entertain any possibility of his imminent exit, forcing the Red Devils to look elsewhere.
United were also strongly linked with Sporting CP midfield linchpin Morten Hjulmand, but they had left it too late to sign Baleba’s alternative.
Amorim coached Hjulmand at Sporting, having signed him from Lecce in 2023. Known for his composure in possession and ability to play between the lines from deep, the Denmark international established himself as a crucial part of the Portuguese head coach’s high-flying side.
In August, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Amorim likes the 26-year-old’s “monster mentality”.
Now, a report in Spain suggests United are considering reuniting the pair at Old Trafford.
According to Fichajes , United have identified Hjulmand as a “priority target” for the winter transfer window. They are expected to make an offer of around €60 million.
It is claimed that his previous relationship with Amorim “could act as a key to unlocking negotiations.”
Further, the Dane, who is also admired at Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur, is understood to have already given the green light to a possible exit if a convincing offer arrives.
Sporting are reportedly reluctant to part ways with their star midfielder, whose contract includes a release clause worth €80m.
