Oliver Glasner: United target reveals that he is in talks with Palace for new deal

Ruben Amorim has been in charge of Manchester United for 50 games but is yet to live up to expectations. The Portuguese head coach was a revelation during his four-year stint at Sporting, where he lifted the league twice.

Having won 71% of his games with the Portuguese club, Amorim was identified as the ideal candidate to succeed Erik ten Hag following a poor start to the 2024/25 campaign.

Unfortunately, the Portuguese has registered 19 wins and 19 defeats so far at the Theatre of Dreams.

Despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe suggesting that Amorim needs three years to build a trophy-winning team, speculation about his future is rife, especially after a mixed campaign so far.

United are languishing in 10th place in the Premier League table after seven games, and several names have been suggested as potential replacements for Amorim, including Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner.

Those rumours are likely to intensify if the Red Devils put in a poor performance against Liverpool on Sunday, 19 October, at Anfield.

Glasner’s side, meanwhile, sit sixth in the league, with just one defeat from 12 games in all competitions. Given the Austrian employs a similar 3-4-3 system, he has also been strongly linked with the hot seat at Old Trafford.

Glasner’s contract with Crystal Palace expires at the end of the season, making him an enticing option for United to consider. The Austrian has now offered an update on his future.

Speaking recently, as cited by The Manchester Evening News , Glasner revealed that he is already in talks to extend his stay at Selhurst Park. He said: “We are talking almost every day. It is not that I need conditions or I want something, Crystal Palace wants to be successful, to continue this pathway and not just the last 18 months.

“What we are always discussing is how can we have the best chance to continue this pathway? Oliver Glasner does not have the final solution and Steve Parish doesn’t have (it), but we discuss about it, what is possible, what we can do.

“Working together and having a relationship together just makes sense if you have the same goals, the same vision, because otherwise you can’t be successful.

“Wherever it is, in any company, if two leaders have different visions, then you go separate ways and you can’t achieve your goal, and that is what we are talking about.

“If we can find the same pathway, the same goal – not for Oliver Glasner, (but) for Crystal Palace – then we will end the talks, and if we don’t find (it) we will also end the talks.”

Palace co-owner Steve Parish has previously expressed his desire to keep hold of Glasner. The Austrian has now echoed that sentiments, although he has also left the door open to a possible exit as well.

For now, United’s decision-makers will likely keep a close eye on his situation at Selhurst Park, especially if the team’s struggles fail to end in the coming months.
