Our Premier League Team of the Season so far in 2025/26

The Premier League has paused for the second time this season as the October international break gets underway.

We’re using this quiet period to assess which players have impressed the most in the opening seven weeks of the campaign in our all-too-early team of the year. Let’s get at it.

Few would have expected Sunderland to have more wins than losses at this point, let alone have the fifth-best defence for goals conceded. Robin Roefs has been the backbone to that effort, keeping three clean sheets while making the third-most saves (24) of any goalkeeper.

Jurrien Timber has started the season in red hot form from an attacking point of view, registering two goals and an assist while completing nine key passes. But he’s also played a role in the meanest defence in the division, which has kept four clean sheets and conceded just three goals, the fewest of any team.

Any concerns about Bournemouth ‘s backline following the sales of Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi may have been misplaced. Marcos Senesi and Bafode Diakite have stepped in to fill the void, with the former in particularly impressing.

He leads all centre-backs in interceptions (13) and ranks second for clearances (57), and his workrate has evidently caught the eye of Lionel Scaloni, who has called him up for the Argentina squad three years after earning his one and only cap.

You wouldn’t know that Marc Guehi missed out on a dream move to Liverpool on deadline day. The centre-back has continued being his assured self at the heart of the Crystal Palace defence, which has kept three clean sheets and conceded just five goals.

On the other side of Arsenal ‘s backline, Riccardo Calafiori has not caught the eye in attack as much as his right-sided counterpart, but he has scored one goal and made two assists nonetheless. The Italian has taken 14 shots, which is only one few than striker Viktor Gyokeres, and created four chances. Defensively, he’s completed 24 recoveries.

Two years after his £100 million move from Brighton, Moises Caicedo is finally emerging as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League . The Chelsea star been an absolute machine thus far, leading all midfielders in the top flight for tackles (28) and interceptions (18). Meanwhile, he’s also scored more goals (3) than any other player in his position and ranks second for total passes among midfielders.

Full disclosure: this writer felt Manchester City had spent too much money on Tijjani Reijnders, but the Dutchman has slotted right into Pep Guardiola’s midfield without a bother.

The 27-year-old has already developed a good relationship with Erling Haaland, providing two assists for the striker, while he also has a goal of his own.

Mohammed Kudus has always been exciting to watch, but often derided for his lack of end product. That might be changing this year as he leads the Premier League for assists (4) and scored the winning goal for Tottenham at Leeds United this past weekend.

The Ghana international’s strike benefitted from a slight deflection, but he deserved it for how well he has played this season. He currently leads the division among right wingers for shots (13) and key passes (13), while his 30 successful take-ons is the most in Europe’s top five leagues.

This is looking like a proper breakout season for Antoine Semenyo, who is second for goals (6) and joint-third for assists (3) in the league this season. Opposition defences have found it nigh-on impossible to lock him down; he’s gotten off the second-most shots (17) and completed the fifth-most dribbles (34) among all players.

Erling Haaland has gotten off to yet another ridiculous start to a season, scoring nine goals in the opening seven games. He’s overtaken Ole Gunnar Solskjær as the top-scoring Norwegian in Premier League history and become the quickest player to 50 goals in the UEFA Champions League. There is just no stopping this man when he is this kind of mood.

It’s only been four games, but we absolutely love Nick Woltemade. He’s had to replace one of the club’s greatest ever strikers while Bayern Munich have been throwing barbs at Newcastle United for spending so much on him. And he’s taken it all in his stride, scoring three goals to help the Magpies bounce back from a rocky start to the season.

Yes, one of those goals was a penalty, but it was one of the most sweetly taken spot kicks we have ever seen. He seems like a lovely guy too, which doesn’t hurt.
