Ruben Amorim’s brave tactical tweaks lauded as United emerge victorious at Anfield

Manchester United broke their nine-year Anfield hoodoo on Sunday, as Ruben Amorim’s side emerged 2-1 victors against Liverpool.

Not only the club, but even the head coach got the monkey off his back after 12 months, with the Red Devils finally winning back-to-back Premier League games in his tenure.

When the teams were announced, there was a fair bit of pessimism among United supporters as the Portuguese tactician opted to drop Benjamin Sesko despite the Slovenian scoring in consecutive games before the international break.

The other big call was bringing Harry Maguire back into the starting lineup in place of the in-form Leny Yoro. Safe to say, both decisions worked an absolute treat.

Matheus Cunha, who started in place of Sesko, fought like a warrior for the whole game, while the former skipper came up with the winner.

After the game, former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp told Sky Sports that Amorim deserves praised for taking the bold calls that led to the famous win.

“Time will tell if Man Utd can kick on but this feels like a huge win for the manager. He got every call right. I questioned whether Maguire was the right man to play but he showed his leadership skills.

“Cunha over Sesko was the right call as well. They also got it right tactically. they never played out from the back once. they got it spot on.

“Amorim has been battered by everyone but he will feel good after that, but a breakthrough moment? Only time will tell.”

United legend Roy Keane refused to get carried away with the result, but he did praise the determination showed by the players, especially for coming up trumps after the home side had scored their equaliser.

He also urged the team to kick on and produce the goods against Brighton and Hove Albion next week.

“I wouldn’t go as far as to say Man Utd are back but it’s a huge win for them,” the former midfielder was quoted as saying by The Manchester Evening News .

“We’ve all been critical of this group of players over the last year but on today’s performance, they showed grit. They stuck at it and you felt they had goals in them.

“It’s a big moment for these players and they should enjoy it. But now they have to kick on.”

Now, Ruben Amorim simply cannot let this momentum pass, and must ensure his players are up for the challenge against the Seagulls, another tricky fixture.
