Scott Mctominay: Barcelona and two English sides keen to sign ex-United ace

It came as quite the surprise when Manchester United decided to offload Scott McTominay to Napoli last summer.

The Scot had come up through the ranks at Carrington, and always came up clutch for the Red Devils since his breakthrough under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Critics often pointed out his lack of technical ability, but the truth is he was misprofiled as a deep-lying playmaker, when he is far more effective as an attacking midfielder who can make late runs into the box.

Napoli boss Antonio Conte utilised him perfectly, as the Italian side clinched the Serie A title with the former United star netting 13 times in all competitions while also registering six assists.

He has since become a cult hero at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, and was named Serie A MVP last season. Not only that, but the Scotland international finished 18th in the Ballon d’Or shortlist.

It is clear to see that the 28-year-old has taken his game to the next level since moving to Italy, but there are murmurs that he is struggling to deal with the added fame and adulation in Naples.

As revealed by Teamtalk , multiple Premier League clubs including Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle are eyeing the versatile midfielder, while surprisingly, Barcelona also have him on their shortlist of targets.

“As Scott McTominay continues to flourish away from Manchester United , Tottenham Hotspur are keen on signing the Napoli midfielder, sources have told TEAMtalk, but it may not be easy for the north London club to bring the Scotland international to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“Sources have told TEAMtalk that Tottenham are among the clubs that have taken a shine to McTominay and are keen on bringing him back to the Premier League.

“Sources close to McTominay have revealed that Barcelona have placed him on a three-man shortlist to bolster their midfield pivot next summer, alongside Amadou Onana and a La Masia graduate.

“In England, Tottenham and Newcastle lead the chase for McTominay. Spurs see the 28-year-old as the ideal player to provide the energy and spark needed in the engine room.

“As for Newcastle, manager Eddie Howe views the former Man Utd star’s leadership and Premier League pedigree as perfect for his side’s Champions League push.”

Whether Scott McTominay will return to England remains to be seen, but the kind of teams interested in him clearly shows how beneficial leaving Old Trafford has been for him.
