Senne Lammens set to start for Manchester United against Liverpool
Manchester United signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day to address their goalkeeping woes.
The Red Devils were looking for a new custodian this summer amid Andre Onana’s poor form since joining the club from Inter Milan in 2023.
The Cameroonian was loaned to Trabzonspor last month, with Altay Bayindir taking over as the new No. 1 this season.
The Turkish shot stopper endured a nervy start to the campaign, but retained his place despite Lammens’ arrival.
After patiently waiting on the sidelines, Senne Lammens was handed his debut against Sunderland on 4 October.
Baby Courtois lived up to expectations , helping his side pick up all three points and register their first clean sheet of the season in a 2-0 win.
The Belgian’s performances prompted calls for Ruben Amorim to keep faith with him between the sticks for the upcoming Premier League clash against Liverpool on Sunday, 19 October, at Anfield. The Merseyside club head into the game on the back of three consecutive defeats across competitions, and United have an opportunity to pile more misery on their bitter rivals.
Amorim, as such, needs to carefully consider his goalkeeping options for the game. Bayindir has conceded 11 goals in six appearances in the Premier League and has yet to inspire confidence. Lammens, meanwhile, looked assured against Sunderland and hardly put a foot wrong.
The Portuguese head coach was coy on the matter during his Friday press conference, refusing to divulge details. However, a recent report from Belgium has given United fans some exciting news.
According to Saturday’s edition of Het Belang van Limburg , Lammens is set to start the game against Liverpool. The report also sheds light on the Belgian composure, as outlined by his former teammates.
The 23 year old’s former teammate, Denzel De Roeve, was reportedly at Lammens’ farewell dinner and told HBVL that the new United custodian remains unfazed under pressure.
“On the way in the car, Senne was so calm. I asked him: ‘Aren’t you nervous now?’ He replied that he probably didn’t realise it yet, but I know him well enough. That was just an excuse for the fact that he wasn’t nervous at all,” said De Roeve.
“United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and is also going through a difficult period, but if anyone can handle that pressure, it’s Senne.”
Former United defender Ritchie De Laet also shared the locker room with Lammens at Antwerp and HBVL have relayed his comments on the player as well.
“Senne is very much on his own then. At Antwerp, he already knew very well what worked for him to get into the zone,” said De Laet.
“In his case, that was: completely isolating himself and reading a book. Or taking another look at the notebook he’s kept since the beginning of last season. In it, he notes down all the points of interest for a match, a kind of guide.”
Lammens was serenaded by the Old Trafford faithful during the win against Sunderland. If he can replicate his heroics against Liverpool, United fans will feel vindicated in dubbing him “Schmeichel in disguise”.
