Shelvey, 33, had been on the lookout for a new club after Burnley released him in June.
And he was snapped up by the Dubai-based Falcons, who are managed by young English coach Harry Agombar and sponsored by Nando's.
Ex- Liverpool , Newcastle and Swansea maestro Shelvey was expected to run rings around his new opponents.
But things didn't get off to the best start in a tired-looking stadium on Saturday evening.
Shelvey did captain the Falcons to a 1-0 win over Al Fath, leaving them third in the table.
But he spurned a gilt-edged chance to crown his first start with a goal from the spot.
After a long wait, Shelvey stepped up and put his penalty low, right and wide of the target.
The nightmare moment ultimately had no impact on the result, but Shelvey will be keen to prove his quality sooner rather than later.
His career has stalled since leaving Newcastle in 2023, having made over 200 appearances for the Magpies.
He also earned six caps for the England national team between 2012 and 2015.
Shelvey only managed a handful of games during spells at Eyupspor and Burnley, as well as Nottingham Forest, where he pocketed £ 75,000 a week .
His last taste of regular football came at Turkish side Caykur Rizespor the season before last.
