Uefa boss confirms Euros could face shock overhaul to make it 'more interesting'

UEFA chief Aleksander Ceferin admits he is thinking about jazzing up European Championship qualifying.

England breezed into last year's Euros after an unbeaten qualifying campaign which included routine home and away wins against Malta.

Fans also sat through mismatches like Portugal vs Liechtenstein and France against Gibraltar, who failed to score and conceded 41 goals in their eight qualifiers.

Ceferin has no plans to change the Euros themselves.

But he admitted at the Portugal Football Summit 2025 that the process of getting to the tournament could be more exciting for supporters.

He said: "Perhaps the qualifiers could be different.

"There won't be any more matches, but a more interesting format. We're thinking about this right now."

Uefa are weighing up a number of ideas as part of an internal review into possible format changes.

Details of their plans have not yet been made public, but they could lean towards models used by other Uefa tournaments like the Nations League or the Champions League .

Fans frequently see top international sides compete against each other in the Nations League, which features a promotion and relegation system.

The revamped Champions League format, which sees clubs play six one-off games in a league phase rather than home and away clashes against only three other teams in a group stage, has also thrown up some mouth-watering fixtures.

Uefa's prospective qualifying face-lift comes amid growing discontent around international breaks.

Fans have had to sit through three different two-week breaks in the first three months of the season.

The current October break will be scrapped from next year onwards as Fifa are combining it with the September break and making it longer so international sides can fit four matches into three weeks.
