RB Leipzig head coach Ola Werner has provided an update on Xavi Simons ' future at the Bundesliga outfit. The 22-year-old maestro has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea this summer as Enzo Maresca looks to bolster his attacking options before the summer transfer window shuts.

It's understood that Manchester City expressed their interest in Simons earlier this month, with Savinho facing an uncertain future and Jack Grealish at Everton on loan. The eight-time Premier League champions also recently sold James McAtee to Nottingham Forest.

Speaking to Sky Sports Germany ahead of Leipzig's clash against Bayern Munich on Friday night, Werner provided an update on Simons' future. The Bundesliga outfit's head coach said: "I’m planning with him, he is with us and training well.

"He is motivated and looking forward to the game against Bayern. I’m looking forward to seeing him in this clash. Until the last day of the transfer window, anything can always happen – we know that. What’s important is to be well prepared – and we are."

According to Sky Sports Germany , Leipzig will focus on selling Simons to Chelsea following the Bayern clash. It's report claims that the Blues are planning to offer the Dutchman a six-year contract, with club-to-club talks scheduled to take place after the opening match of the new Bundesliga season - meaning the move could potentially progress in the next week or so.

Marcel Schäfer provided an update on Simons' future last weekend. Speaking to Sky Sports Germany on Sunday, the Leipzig director said: "We make all our decisions based on sporting and economic considerations.

"If it works for everyone, then we have often allowed players to make a move in the past. Right now, that's not the case, and if nothing changes, Xavi will remain an RB Leipzig player."

Back in April, Simons was quizzed on his future at Leipzig. Keeping his cards close to his chest, the attacking midfielder said: "I’m still a young player, I have many dreams and the club knows that.

"But right now, the most important thing for me is to play well in the upcoming games. Then we have the international matches, and after that we’ll sit down and see what happens."

If Chelsea were to sign Simons, he would provide competition for Jamie Gittens on the left wing and cover for Cole Palmer in a central role.
