Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim’s near-£200million summer splurge on revamping his forward line saw him bring in Matheus Cunha , Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko .

And that has led to Zirkzee being squeezed out — he is yet to start a game this term and has made just four sub appearances.

Not even the departure of Rasmus Hojlund on loan to Napoli in August opened things up – with the lack of European football and a Carabao Cup exit at Grimsby meaning squad players are struggling for game time.

That has also cost him his place in Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad, with the World Cup finals eight months away.

It emerged this month that the 24-year-old could look for a move to keep his hopes of going to the tournament alive.

And Roma are now keeping a close eye on his situation, with coach Gian Piero Gasperini keen to strengthen his attack.

Funds are tight at the Stadio Olimpico, so a loan move for a proven forward would appeal.

Zirkzee’s stock remains high in Italy .

He enjoyed an impressive couple of years with Bologna, where his form earned him a £36.5m move to United in July last year

Several other clubs are also likely to be interested if the forward is given the green light to go — with West Ham linked.
