Amorim warns 'everybody has to do better’ in blunt programme notes after Grimsby

RUBEN AMORIM kept it short as he demanded Manchester United "do better" following their Grimsby nightmare.

The Red Devils were dumped out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday in one of football's biggest giant-killings and one of the worst United performances in an already-torrid post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Now Amorim has apologised to fans for being KO'd by the League Two minnows in a short statement in the Burnley match-day programme.

Amorim wrote: "Good afternoon and welcome back to Old Trafford.

"Today, as we welcome Scott Parker and his Burnley side, we need to give a response after Wednesday night's cup fixture.

"I can only say to you supporters that I am sorry.

"The better team on the night won the game and we got what we deserved."

Amorim continued: "Everybody has to do better.

"Today, we have to show intensity from the start.

"We need to go out onto the pitch and show we are capable of playing, because the only way we fix this is by winning games."

Immediately after their cup humiliation, fans were calling for Amorim's head.

And ahead of the Burnley clash at Old Trafford, the boss admitted he has no idea if he'll keep his job , with Gareth Southgate tipped to replace him.

Amorim confessed: “I don’t know what’s going to happen, that is my idea.

“I am not going to promise you anything  about what is going to be the future.

“I’m the manager of Manchester United and I think that is not going to change.”

The Portuguese manager - who was blasted for his use of a tactics board during Man Utd's defeat to Grimsby - added: “Sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love my players, sometimes I want to defend my players.

“Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years.

“To be honest with you, every time we have one defeat like that I’m going to be like that, prepare yourselves."

And asked who talks him out of it when he considers quitting, he said: “Myself. I just need ten minutes with myself alone. I don’t need anyone.

“When you say I want to quit, it’s that, ‘f***, I want to quit, I don’t love my players, I sometimes hate my kids’. I’m going to be like that, it’s not going to change. I’m going to suffer.

“We just need to win some games and then things will be easier to do.”

MANCHESTER UNITED are at rock bottom after the biggest cup upset saw the club crash out of the Carabao Cup second-round to League Two Grimsby Town on penalties.

Ruben Amorim's United lost to a four-tier side for the first time ever.

The home fans sang “you’re getting sacked in the morning” to Amorim throughout and you can’t help but wonder if they’re right.

Here's how SunSport's Katherine Walsh rated United's flops at Blundell Park.
