Chelsea star leaks his own contract renewal new before the club have announced it

A Chelsea star let it slip that he has already penned a new deal at Stamford Bridge after their 5-1 rout against West Ham on Friday.

Facing a London rival for the second straight week, the Blues bounced back from a lacklustre 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace on the opening weekend to earn their first win of the new Premier League season.

Prior to the match, there had been reports that Marc Cucurella had signed a new contract, with his current deal expiring in 2028.

Despite there being no official announcement on such an agreement, Cucurella went public with the information on Friday.

When queried about it by Spanish media at the London Stadium, the 27-year-old said: 'Yes, it's done. We already did it.

'I'm very happy, the club gave me the confidence and I'm very happy to be here. Hopefully I will have a great year.'

There were rumours that Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr were in for Cucurella, but the Spaniard has put those to bed.

Cucurella signed for Chelsea from Brighton in August 2022 for a fee rising to £63million, one of the most expensive transfers for a full back in Premier League history.

He joined on a six-year contract, having impressed at Brighton in the 2021-22 season where he won the club’s Player of the Season award.

The Spaniard has now accumulated 115 appearances for Chelsea since his arrival, becoming a dependable figure despite early struggles when he arrived at the club.

In the 2024-25 campaign, Cucurella made 54 appearances in all competitions and was a key figure in Chelsea's Club World Cup triumph this summer.

At international level, Cucurella has earned 17 caps for Spain since making his senior debut in 2021.

He provided provided the assist to Mikel Oyarzabal for his nation's winning goal as Spain defeated England in the Euro 2024 final, where Cucurella was named in the Team of the Tournament.
