Niko Kovac: “We were a few minutes away”

Sebastian Kehl (in the mixed zone): “We didn't perform well in the first half; we played poorly. A lot of things didn't work out, we didn't handle ourselves well and we were lucky not to be further behind. In the second half, it was a completely different game with significantly more energy. I think the changes we made also gave us much, much better control, both with the ball and without the ball. We were far too passive in the first half, much more active in the second half and then had a lot of chances. We were much more stable and probably deserved the point for our performance in the second half. In the end, it wasn't enough over 90 minutes."

Niko Kovac (on Sky) "I think the spectators saw a good Klassiker today. It's a shame we didn't manage to make it 2-2. But at the end of the day, we just weren't good enough in the first half. We were a few minutes away in the second half, otherwise we might have done it. We just weren't aggressive enough in the first half. Of course, we wanted to stay compact, but we also wanted to push forward at the right moments. What caused us problems was Harry Kane, who almost acted as a defensive midfielder there. In the second half, we let Pascal play more as a number ten to prevent the opponent from shifting the play. That worked much better. We were much more dynamic."

Nico Schlotterbeck (on Sky): "To survive in Munich, you have to play with courage and drive. We completely lacked that in the first half. We didn't compete in any challenges. The second half was encouraging, because I think we were better than Bayern. But over 90 minutes – and especially in the first half – it just wasn't enough, you won't win like that in Munich, because they're just too good."

Pascal Gross (in the mixed zone): “We wanted to get behind their back line and play long balls forward to win second balls. In the second half, we played even more man-to-man, were braver, put them under extreme pressure and created our chances. We could have equalised before they scored their second goal. It was two completely different halves.”

Gregor Kobel (in the mixed zone): “In the second half, we did what we had planned to do before the game: we tried to play freely, be brave, play our game and claim the ball. It was a completely different story then. Today, we saw again how good we can be. We were the better team in the second half. But the first half was even worse because of that, that has to be said. Very little of what we had planned worked out. It was incredibly difficult for each player to find passing options. Up front, we didn’t really get behind the defence and couldn’t implement our game plan. In the second half, it was a completely different game and I think the game could have turned.” Transcribed by Christina Reinke
