Burnley drew first blood through Josh Cullen's 47th minute strike.

But chaos quickly followed as the floodlights began playing up.

Despite it being broad daylight, the bulbs began flickering on and off around the stadium.

Players on the field quickly became distracted by the nuisance lights.

And it forced the referee to bring play to a stop.

Burnley captain Cullen and Sunderland skipper Granit Xhaka were both summoned by the official as he explained the situation.

Meanwhile, ground staff at Turf Moor did their best to fix the dodgy floodlights.

They attempted to turn them on and off several times as players kept warm by passing the ball around.

Their efforts proved futile though as the lights continued to flicker.

And the crowd showed their discontent by booing loudly.

But finally the bulbs seemed to obey as they stayed off for good, allowing the game to get back underway.
